Regulation means the ability of your autonomic nervous system (ANS) to respond to life’s challenges with appropriate flexibility and then return to a state of balance—not stuck in stress, nor collapsed in exhaustion.

  • Mobilize when needed (e.g., stand your ground, take action, speak up)

  • Rest when safe (e.g., digest, sleep, connect)

Polyvagal Theory

Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory describes three primary branches of the autonomic nervous system. Each is a physiological response to how safe or threatened we feel—often beneath conscious awareness.

1. Parasympathetic (Ventral Vagal) - Relaxed

  • Characterized by: normal heart rate & muscle tone

  • Associated emotions: relaxed, engaged, curious, creative, hopeful

2. Sympathetic - Mobilized

  • Characterized by: inreased heart rate, blood pressure, hormone flow, and muscle tone.

  • Associated emotions when feeling safe: energetic, active, playful, motivated

  • Associated emotions when feeling unsafe: “fight or flight”, stressed, anxious, fearful

3. Parasympathetic (Dorsal Vagal) - Immobilized

  • Characterized by: low heart rate, low muscle tone, low energy.

  • Associated emotions when feeling safe: blissful, dreamy, tranquil, meditative

  • Associated emotions when feeling unsafe: depressed, unhappy, lonely, hopeless
